Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
The Black Mariah Theater (@theblackmariahtheater)
Twin sisters Analiese and Sophia make up the Kansas City (MO) based band, The Black Mariah Theater. Their “sparkly, witch-rock” sound, as it has been described, is genre-bending funky drum beats, jazzy guitar tones, and tell-it-like-it-is lyrics. A rock n roll show perfect for anyone who’s had a bad day, a lonely night or a broken heart.
Analiese and Sophia shared with me what it means to them personally to be indie music women artists: “Being in a duo made up of two women on the indie music scene means that we have had to stand up for ourselves, work hard at self-promotion and book gigs while combating sexism in the music industry. We have been turned down from gigs, treated like “less than” and been assumed to be the “girlfriends” of the “real band” when we show up at gigs. Through this, we have learned how powerful it is for women to stand together in the industry! We, as a community, can mutually benefit each other and keep growing indie women artists through empowerment and support! We have learned that this means a lot, to us and to other women, because we all face these same struggles no matter where we are, and together we can push past it, and make the music world a more welcoming, equal, and supportive place.”
