Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Daphne Ang of TCOMAS (@tocomas.music)
The Chronicles of Manimal and Samara (TCOMAS) – London based duo pioneering a new realm of sound where poetry and the spoken word meets electronic and rock. Formed in late 2019 by members Andrea Papi (Manimal) and Daphne Ang (Samara). Their music defies the rigid categorisation of musical genres. In particular, their sound integrates the literary (poetic and dramatic) with the musical to create a sonic space where electronic and rock coexist. Spoken passages alternated with lyrical poetry form the central element of the vocal component.
They have found inspiration in the music of Kraftwerk, Tool, Air, Patti Smith, Jim Morrison and Leonard Cohen, as well as in the literature of Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, and Charles Bukowski. ‘Atoms’ their debut single will be released on July 31, 2020. The track forms part of the independently produced album ‘Full Spectrum’. ‘Atoms’ was premiered by radio stations in Singapore (973FM Blasts That Last), Detroit, USA (Alien X Radio), and Istanbul, Turkey (Radio Corax), and will be featured in GlamGlare, Right Chord Music Blog and Queen Mob’s Teahouse.

Daphne shared what it means to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“At first glance, being an ‘independent female artist’ may seem to tick all the boxes of a person in a position of disadvantage. But if you give it some thought, being an independent artist gives women the power to dictate their own image as well as the freedom and ability to assert their identity, personality, and voice. Being your own manager means that you are not subject to the control of others. You are freed from the need to conform to a predetermined personality and image. Sadly, this image is often homogenising – leading to the effacement and objectification of women — as objects of desire and subjects of the ever scrutinising male gaze.”
