Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Sun Flower Thieves (@sunflowerthieves)
After sixteen years of friendship, Leeds-based pop-folk band Sunflower Thieves are a strong “soulful sisterhood” (LeftLion 2018) nurturing a unique sound, through ethereal vocal harmonies and honest lyrics to soothe the mind. Each track is hugely personal to the songwriters, hence the intimate atmosphere and sincere performance you experience in watching them.
Following their recent European tour, Sunflower Thieves released stripped back single, ‘Heavy Weight’ in September 2019. “You think they’re great, and then suddenly another track comes in and they’ve raised the bar still higher” – Dean Jackson, DJ, BBC Introducing East Mids.”
Sunflower Thieves shared with me what it means to them to be indie music women artists:
“We are always told it’s cool that we’re ‘female-fronted’, which it is, but it’s unfortunate that that is what is sometimes focused on. In a live setting, we are noticeably either on a majority male line up, unless it is an event or lineup specifically and deliberately made up of female-identifying artists.
We like to support and collaborate with as many other independent creatives who give a platform to or are led by womxn, and there is definitely a HUGE sense of community that comes with being an indie female artist, which we love. We are inspired by all of these womxn, who have become our friends, our allies and our number one fans, as we have for them. We are excited about developments and improvements in gender imbalance in lineups, specific funding opportunities and open discussion around the topic of women in the music industry.
Additionally, the amount of love and support we receive from our male peers all year round, and especially on International Women’s Day is overwhelming, which is super important and not to be overlooked. We are super proud and super grateful to be indie music women.”
You can hear Sunflower Thieves single, “Heavy Weight” on the IMW’s Spotify Playlist.
