Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Jasmine Thomas
We asked Jasmine what it means to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“I have been putting a lot of time and effort in teaching myself a great variety of things in order to be able to be in complete charge of my music. I have always been writing music but would depend on other musicians to play that music which allowed me to work with some amazing musicians but also led to frustration at times, the result being that I taught myself how to produce my own music and my own videos. It took quite some time but I’m finally ready to show the world what years of effort and hard work have resulted in.”
Hailing from one of the most exciting capitols in the world Jasmine Thomas is just as vibrant as her hometown Berlin. She puts her energy into her singing, songwriting, performing, arranging and producing and never gets tired of learning new things. The Gambian-German musician writes songs that celebrate individuality, personal strength and depict human emotions. In a world where many artists are trying so hard to be cool, Jasmine Thomas is trying harder to be warm and open.
Jasmine’s music talks about people and life: the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships, the struggle many face in finding the right work/life balance, and the various feelings, concerns and doubts we often keep to ourselves. In her upcoming music she explores the diversity of her hometown Berlin by delving into the different styles that have surrounded her all her life, firmly rooted in her R’n’b roots but giving it different spins. Her lyrics rarely depict only her own experiences, she listens to people’s stories and puts them into her songs.
Her new single “Broken glass” weaves the story of a relationship that is falling apart. Pieces of glass are scattered on the floor, just like the broken parts of ourselves that we leave behind in a shattered relationship. Her warm vocals unfold into a powerful, almost angry voice over the course of the song, evolving with the melancholy timbre of the keys. The beat is almost hypnotic, rising and falling with the emotions of the song and it takes you through the emotional toll of a relationship that is as good as over – the quiet contemplative moments in between fights, the back and forth of an argument, ending with an energetic step forward and the realization that it is all over. The dark, reddish tones of the video give the song a moody vibe, appearing like a feverish dream in which Jasmine is lost. (Bio provided by Jasmine Thomas)
