Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Phoebe Silva (@phoeborama)
Phoebe Silva is an LA-based solo indie artist who combines elements of jazz, folk, retro-pop, and blues to create a wholly unique and timeless sound. Evoking frequent comparisons to artists such as Amy Winehouse, Linda Rondstat, Hailey Reinhart, Lily Allen, Adele, and Gwen Stefani, Phoebe draws songwriting influence from 90’s pop, jazz standards, Motown, R&B, rockabilly blues, and classic American folk music.
About her latest song: “I wrote ”Strong Enough” two years ago. About a man. My monologue to him, giving myself the closure I knew he would never be able to give me. It could be about so many men I’ve been with. I’m fire and flood, baby, and I have learned to love myself… and I feel loved by so many people. But romantic intimacy… what a b*tch. It keeps tearing me open and exposing the still-unhealed parts of myself. I wear my strength like a badge but it often feels like a curse. I’m releasing this as a single on Valentine’s Day (the irony!) I am proud and exhausted and heartbroken and jubilant and confident and defeated and moving forward bc f*ck, it what else would I do?”
Phoebe shared with me what it means to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“To me, being an independent woman in music means being resourceful. Using what I have to express my view of the world. It’s an exciting time to be a female artist, there are many mainstream and independent female artists who are providing unique perspectives that challenge and dismantle traditional views of femininity. In the LA indie music scene, there are tons of dynamic and powerful female artists coming up. I don’t feel at all defined by my gender identity as an artist but I do love to take traditional feminine imagery and twist it around in my work. Finding new and creative ways to frame retro images and song elements in a modern way is my bliss right now, and being an independent artist I have complete creative freedom to do whatever I want, which is super liberating.”
