Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
SISTRA (Instagram @sistramusic)
Having amassed a loyal following with their innovative covers of classics like I Would Die 4 U – Prince, and Gypsy – Fleetwood Mac, they released their debut alt-pop banger ‘You’re a Lot’ in May. It quickly gained 380,000 plays on Instagram (3000+ followers) and in under a week had 25,000 Spotify streams. It caught the attention of BBC Introducing with Alex West saying “occasionally an act comes to us at BBC Music Introducing almost fully formed, and that is the case with [SISTRA] & when this one dropped in my inbox I was delighted”.
They directed, produced & styled the “You’re a Lot” Music Video, starring comedy actor Harry Trevaldwyn – it bangs. SISTRA are sisters from London who describe their work as emotional music for emotional people (for fans of The Japanese House, MUNA & The 1975) Their witty, emotive lyrics are paired with addictive beats and angelic vocals. This is the first single from their six-track debut EP which is ready for release in late August. BBC Introducing has said, “it slaps”.
SISTRA shared with us what it means to them personally to be indie music women:
“As two sisters at the early stages of our career in the music industry, we have already witnessed the huge disproportion of men to women. Those moments when you find yourself surprised that the producer/A&R/Mixer is a woman, and the frustration that this should be so rare. Our favourite artists are women – from Stevie Nicks & Joni Mitchell, to The Japanese House, MUNA & Charli XCX. To be represented on a platform that focuses on the growth of female artists would be incredible, and we’d be so excited to join a community of women in music and hopefully make some great connections. Our music is for everyone, but it is very much born out of the experiences and feelings of two women who grew up together. We hope you like our music & that it resonates with the wonderful platform you’ve created.”
