Pop singer/songwriter Heather Evans has an impressive list of songwriting accomplishments. She recorded her first album, ‘Impatient Heart’ at the age of 17, and several songs from it were featured on MTV’s Laguna Beach. Her songs have been played on the radio, featured on CNN, and appeared in commercials for Mitsubishi and Powerplant Studios. Evans opened for bands Sixpence None The Richer and Andrew Belle and performed the national anthem at a rally for former president Barack Obama.
Two years ago, Evans hung up her guitar when she and her husband and two children relocated from Columbus, Ohio to Sacramento, California to be closer to family. The transition had its share of difficulties, but when they got settled, Evans decided to pick up her guitar again and make music. But she almost quit as she realized she didn’t have the connections (venues, musicians, promoters) in Sacramento as she did back in Columbus and would have to start over.
Evans eventually built new connections as she was invited back to the open mics she performed and was also invited to play at her church. Two of those connections were guitarist and producer Jeff Kunde of Jesus Culture and engineer Jeremy Edwardson (Kim Walker, Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith) who would help Evans produce ‘The Life EP’.
The Life EP is Heather’s third EP release. With its 3 tracks, Heather Evans gives us an upbeat, honest, heartfelt look at her life in stages – marriage, family, and motherhood – that anyone can relate to. The mix of piano, acoustic guitar, and gentle percussion allow Heather’s beautiful vocals to shine as they infuse each song with a warmth that will leave you feeling like you’re snuggled up in a fuzzy blanket.
The first track, ’20 Years From Now’, is a love letter to the one you love, where you look into the future of growing older together through a span of 20 plus years, lovingly building a life and family together until death do you part. The drums and bright piano keep a tempo of a train, matching the lyrics depicting time marching on. The sorrowful cello notes beautifully complement the arrangement as do the angelic background vocals and breezy chorus. Heather’s voice has an emotional edge that brings home what it means to tell your soul mate you want to spend forever with them.
Slowing things down is the second track, ‘The Good Life’. It opens with what sounds like a soothing, gentle rainfall that fades gradually away with the soft strumming of an acoustic guitar. Mix in Heather’s captivating lead vocals, and the haunting notes from a steel guitar in the background and you have a mesmerizing effect. The lyrics portray how family life isn’t easy, but together you have made it a good life; one that you wouldn’t want to go through it without them. The song slowly fades out with the exquisite wail of a steel guitar.
‘Mom Life’ is a track that is written with humor and a lot of heart. It’s a funny but realistic look at being a mom that will connect. The acoustic guitar, light drums, and piano mirror the lightness of the song while delightfully matching its tempo to the chorus. Heather’s wonderful sense of humor shines through the lyrics that lament what you deal with and lose (privacy, showers, sick days) but what you ultimately gain is a good life (endless hugs, growing together) a mother wouldn’t trade for anything.
Heather Evans is a talented singer/songwriter who pours her heart into each of her songs that creates a meaningful connection with listeners. A full-length album would be most welcome in the near future. This EP is one you’ll definitely want to have in your collection.
