X.AR’I’s “Jumpstate”: the hooks grab you, the lyrics speak truth, the music moves you.

When I hear that X.ARI has released new music, my ears perk up.  She has a brilliant, uncanny ability to combine pain and power, courage and fear, the personal and the general in one song, often in one line. Her newest release, “Jumpstate” and the video with it does all of that and more.

“X.ARI coined the cord “jumpstate” to describe the feeling of wanting the flee, the terror-driven urge for self-preservation through flight.  The accompanying video followers her in a spacesuit, flailing,  spinning through a vortex – or maybe a birth canal – out of control.  But she gains control.

It’s just my reflex/I gotta reset/ I don’t want to leave yet

I’m in a jumpstate/its flight or fight, babe…

She sings to a clap beat backed by a moving keyboard and shimmering electronic aurora. And through it all, her urgent vocals demand your attention. The hooks grab you, the lyrics speak truth, the music moves you. The arrangement evolves through raw pop to ethereal and brings you along nicely, as all of X.ARI’s music does.  “Jumpstate” is yet another reason my ears perk up when I hear X.ARI has released new music.
