Award-winning UK singer-songwriter Verity White’s new album Breaking Out serves up a kick-ass attitude about breaking down your self-imposed barriers.
These songs are lyrically raw, honest, and in your face. They’re a lets-get-real self-talk about putting you back in the driver seat of life by recognizing your own strengths. That said, these tracks combine White’s brilliant soulful vocals with heavy hitting melodies that demand your attention. Crank up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride.
The album shoots out the gate with the aptly self-titled track, ‘Breaking Out’. This is a stand out track with a gravelly guitar loop, deep drums intro and bright piano (heard in the latter part of the song) that are the perfect combination to complement Verity’s rock vocals. Her alternating rocking and growling vocals dripping with fierceness, drive the intense lyrics of declaring you’re breaking away from what’s holding you back.
After getting pumped about breaking out, ‘Zeros and Ones’ slows you down with soft keyboards and Verity’s emotional vocals that lay out her heartbreak. As you’re lulled into a sense of poetic calmness, in marches a hard-hitting guitar and drums. These are pierced by Verity’s beautiful airy, bright vocals of determination to move on from a doomed relationship.
A fuzzy synthesizer introduces then creates an eerie melody for the surprisingly upbeat ‘Demons In Your Head’, the next track. Instead of a dark foray, Verity delivers a rousing dose of lyrical positivity on how to chase those demons away.
Crank up this rocking track, ‘I Don’t Care’, and party on. Verity brings it with rock vocals that morph into classic Chrissy Hynde on the chorus. The song has a quiet interlude more than halfway through with a softer, gentler, almost angsty vocal before we are returned to the party with the intrusion of drums. If you want to let loose on a night out while you drink your favorite libation, here’s the perfect song.
Another stand out track is the latest release, ‘Exhale’. This goosebump-inducing song grabs you from the get-go. Verity’s breathy, sultry and seductive vocal captures you and doesn’t let go. You’ll find yourself breathing in and out in tandem during the “breath in/breath out” refrain.
‘See Through’ is compelling with its scratchy keyboards, a melody reminiscent of the 80s, bright background vocals, hard-hitting lyrics, and Verity’s lyrical voice.
Other tracks rounding out the album are ‘Face It’ where Verity reaches beautiful highs on her vocals; ‘Your Darkest Secret’ which Verity makes lyrically haunting; ‘Slow Fall’ that has a bright piano loop that Verity effortlessly matches with her voice and ‘Overcome’ with its dark, heavy guitar intro to Verity’s scorching vocals.
