Indie Music Women’s Artist of the Day is…
Clare Kelly (@clarekellymusic)
Clare Kelly grew up listening to storytellers like Springsteen and Stevie Nicks who have played an influential role in shaping her signature sound. Hailing from Leeds, Clare has received massive support from UK television and radio including BBC Introducing and Yorkshire Music Collective following the release of her ‘left field pop and soul’ debut EP Elusive Yusef.
Having spent a considerable amount of time travelling and performing overseas, Clare has many tales to tell through her emotive and often brutally honest lyrics. For as long as Clare can recall, she has been inspired by the ocean and aquatic creatures. Now, Clare Kelly aims to offer something different and unique to her fans with her soothing ‘mer-folk’ music.
For fans of Angel Olsen, Antony & The Johnsons and London Grammar, Clare Kelly’s voice and her recently released meditative single ‘Breathe’ is one that needs to be heard, especially in the current anxiety-inducing global climate.
Clare Kelly writes stories in sound; ‘Breathe’ is about trusting your gut and making your own decisions to get to where you want to be in life. Clare Kelly’s unique vocal is soothing and comforting, her well-crafted lyrics inspire strength and her all-female band fuel the track with energy.
Clare shared with me what it means to her to be an indie music woman artist: “It is empowering to have a platform on which to express my emotions and tell stories as an independent woman. I love singing more than anything and writing lyrics in a confessional and honest way is how my songs come about. Performing is my favourite aspect of being an Indie Music female artist as singing feels like the only way I can truly express myself as an individual.”
You can hear Clare’s new single, “Breathe” on the IMW Spotify playlist.
