Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Jenna Vivacora
Jenna Vivacora is a cinematic pop artist based in Nashville. Her music uniquely integrates her life as a sojourner with a multiethnic background, military experience, chronic illness, and wide cross-cultural experiences, living in Central Asia, Turkey, and Germany. Jenna is the creator behind Wait for Her, an original musical about an architect who is healing from sexual assault, as well as the composer for the Irish musical, Deirdre, a legend reimagined.
Says Jenna, “When I say that I’ve moved a lot since I left home 10 years ago, I mean it. After my time at the Naval Academy, I lived in Kazakhstan, Turkey, Germany, Fort Benning, Wheaton, New York City, Nashville, and Fort Lauderdale, doing long distance on and off with my husband of 5 years. I’ve been to countries that most people don’t even know exist. How then do you describe yourself in a few words? “Who, me? I’m a tri-racial, almost multi-lingual bartender with a bachelors in math, who tap dances and rollerskates, isn’t afraid to eat horse, has mostly queer and autistic friends, is chronically ill, and could probably beat you up?” (Bio courtesy of Jenna)
We asked Jenna what it means to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“Being an indie woman artist means breaking new ground. It means taking the path less traveled–finding a better and more fair way to treat others and boost the resumes and careers of our colleagues. It means creating things that women have not been invited into the process of creating. It means saying something about the human experience from our unique point of view.
Answering this question just evoked a lot of emotion for me. There’s space for us– we have the power to make space for each other! And I’m so excited to change the world with other women who are breaking new ground, including my amazing producer Sirintip Phasuk (seriously, look into her!).
I’m coming into the indie music scene from the musical theater space, where I’ve taken the career advancement of women and non-binary people very seriously, and am passionate about creating both music and theater that helps ALL people to excel, feel seen, and find joy.”
