Retro songstress Chelsea Nenni leads Late Slip, a band that “delivers a stinging sense of nostalgia that holds on tight and won’t let go.” Their 2020 Reelin EP was created by producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, Nikki Lane) and features R&B guitarist extraordinaire, Nick Waterhouse. Late Slip recently released a music video for the title track.
It’s the first silky notes of the guitar together with Chelsea Nenni’s enticing vocals that compel you. But lurking in the background is the inviting cut-out scenery that distracts your attention. Imagine yourself being Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, Snow White, or Alice in Wonderland making your way through the multi-layers of silhouetted forest trees, deer, and foxes to your destination.
Under the blanketing colors of the scenery’s backlighting, you find yourself wrapped up in a dreamy vision. However, a captivating chorus soundscape of Nenni’s powerful vocals, Bradleah Caulkins’ wailing saxophone, and Nick Waterhouse’s sultry guitar solo interrupt it. Afterward, you’re back in your dreamy state before the chorus rouses you once again. This all culminates with Nenni’s story-telling choreography of the lyrics’ poignant emotional upheaval of unrequited passion. The end result is a fresh take on a familiar story of someone wreaking havoc with your emotions in a tantalizing way.

Late Slip’s Chelsea Nenni spoke with me recently about making the Reelin’ music video from its concept to the finished product.
What is the concept of the video? Did you have one in mind when looking for a location to shoot it?
The concept of the video is kind of an amalgamation of Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and The Wizard of Oz. I was definitely inspired by the location itself and leaned into the dreamy aspect of the scenery.
Where was the video filmed? Why did you pick this particular place?
The music video was filmed at Hemisfair which is a super cool park in downtown San Antonio, TX! I picked this spot because of that beautiful structure that I danced in during the video. It’s just the perfect piece of scenery!
What is the structure you are dancing inside? What drew you to it?
The structure is a little art piece that’s installed in Hemisfair Park right outside a local children’s theatre. I think it must have been meant to be a set piece for make-believe or self-produced kid’s plays. The night I filmed the video, I was walking by and noticed that it was backlit, creating that beautiful blue glow. I decided right then to film the music video and ran to change my clothes and get my tripod haha.
Explain your choreography process including if it was planned ahead or why it wasn’t.
To be honest, I improvised all the choreography and edited it together later! I danced ballet & jazz when I was a kid, so I have some tricks up my sleeve, but I definitely made the choreography up as I was filming. I don’t really know why I did it — I think I was just super inspired by the set-piece and had a feeling that if I went out there, I’d figure something out. Thankfully, it worked!
Why did you film the video while playing the song only in your head? Was it harder or easier than you thought, and why?
Honestly, it was just a function of me filming the video by myself while also dancing in it. I only had my iPhone with me and that was busy recording the video, so I had nothing to play the song at the same time. Haha *very* DIY!!
What did you learn from the experience of filming, editing, and producing your own music video?
I learned that while it would have been MUCH much easier to have help (and next time I definitely want to collaborate with other people!!), I also had to figure the logistics out myself, which made it a good challenge. I think we all were tasked with becoming very DIY over the past two years and developed some new skills. I love how the video turned out and think what makes it great is that I had to be scrappy and improvise.
You can buy the Reelin’ EP on major platforms including Bandcamp, iTunes, and Apple Music.
