Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Hannah Summer (lead singer of Greye)
We asked Hannah what does it mean to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“I love being a woman in indie rock. I am actually a pretty shy person in my private life, so being on stage gives me such a unique opportunity to both share my passion for music and to show people that anyone can rock out regardless of who they are. Every time I perform, I really try to show the audience that just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I can’t love rock & roll. Our original material is very driving and begs for a strong female lead, which is great fun to deliver. When we have to perform covers, we tend to do a lot of songs that are traditionally sung/written by men, so it’s also a really fun challenge to put my own spin on them as a female.”
Hannah also told us about her music journey with Greye:
“My journey with Greye began back when I was a sophomore in high school. I was slotted into a guitar class because the other elective courses I wanted were full, where I ended up meeting Jett Wolfe (Greye’s guitar player), who knew Joshua Reid (our first bass player), who knew Ray Grimard (Greye’s drummer). After coming in second place as a three-piece acoustic act at our high school’s Battle of the Bands competition where Ray happened to be in attendance, he invited us to his music studio in town to see what we would sound like if we added some drums.
We began writing original music together, and after a year of writing and recording our first album, we debuted our live show at one of the local clubs in our town. Since then, we have never truly stopped – we have gone on to write a total of seven original albums, travelled all across the country in our two tour buses, and have played probably thousands of live shows. Our style has evolved so much over the years, from “progressive indie” all the way up to the explosive “new age southern rock” for which we’re known today.
Our current lineup is such a dream, Jett Wolfe (guitar/back-up vocals), Ray Grimard (drums), Ken-e Williams (keyboardist/back-up vocals), and our newest member Tommy Brady (bass/back-up vocals). I think our music is as true to ourselves as we’ve been since we began. I can’t wait for the world to hear the new record!”
