Song Review: KatieBeth – Will I Ever Get To Love You

Singer-songwriter KatieBeth creates music her way, determined not to have what she writes placed into any specific genre by anyone. She has done just that, self-funding two albums starting with her debut, Breaking from the Shadows (2009) and Here I Am (2011) and releasing singles from both.

In 2014 she released the single, “I Got Your Freebird Right Here”, and in 2017 she released “All That Matters”, dedicated to our military veterans, along with a powerful music video for it. In 2018 she released the singles “Will I Ever Get To Love You”, “Liars”, and “On Your Left”.

“Will I Ever Get To Love You” is an honest look at the complexity of loving someone who isn’t quite ready to be with you. The song depicts perspective heartache through KatieBeth’s down to earth songwriting and potent vocals.

The intro of the song is a slow, intentional acoustic guitar riff that sets up a melancholy soundscape. KatieBeth’s robust vocals make their entrance with an unmistakable gritty power as she laments about her lover who splits their time between her and another lover. You can feel the empathy when she tells them that she understands the reasons they’re not strong enough to be with her.

There is no underlying tension in the first verse which cleverly deceives you when going into the chorus. It is here in the chorus where the turmoil of the situation erupts into an explosive, impassioned vocal release. She questions her future with the one she loves through gritty vocals soaked with a poignant ache that also tinges the endnotes and grabs your heartstrings securely.

Then you head into the second verse, ramping down the climactic feel of the chorus, sliding back into the compassionate fabric of the song. Here is where KatieBeth conveys with heartfelt vocals a hopefulness and a belief that the situation will eventually turn around and her lover will come through one day. Heading back into the chorus, you hear KatieBeth once again effortlessly lay down her honest, raw emotions.

The bridge is where her vocals break free. You go through her anguish with every word she sings, ending with soaring high notes that blend seamlessly into a stirring guitar solo that echoes her sentiment. And one last time, we join her in the haunting soundscape of the chorus, wondering if she’ll get an answer to her question.

Highly Recommended. KatieBeth demonstrates her powerful songwriting and singing talents on this track. Her vocals possess a tough vulnerability coupled with dynamic power. Not only should this song be on your playlist, but all her songs should also be. Her forthcoming album will no doubt be highly anticipated and well worth the wait. My mailbox – both electronic and physical has been stuffed with Christmas music. Rather than run a list of who is doing what for Christmas, I decided to pick two that really struck me as standouts. Those two are “Mi Nueva Bici” by Nancy Sanchez, and Whitney Tai and Classical Guitarist, Michael Trainor ‘s winter EP debuting their original composition “Flowers By The Roadside,” plus an eclectic version of “Silent Night”, due out next week.

“Mi Nueva Bici” evokes memories of your childhood Christmas when you begged Santa to put a bicycle under the tree and there it was. Using a simple, happy tune on the keyboard, Nancy sings in Spanish about those joys, her voice lilting like a Christmas ornament reflecting a grinning statue of St. Nick on the mantelpiece, overlooking your two-wheeled treasure. The chords are simple but sticky – it is the kind of song you can put on in the background as you decorate your tree or hum to yourself while cutting the dough for Christmas cookies. “Mi Nueva Bici” should be under everyone’s tree.

“Flowers By The Roadside, ”is a different kind of Christmas song, one that reminds you of the deeper feelings of the winter holiday season. Whitney’s voice is magical, filled with emotion, evoking a night walk along a winter sidewalk with moonlight glinting off the snow. Produced by #1 Billboard Composer, Tim Janssens, the EP also brings us an eclectic interpretation of “Silent Night” – a break of the traditional versions we are hearing on radio stations and elevators. The EP has the feeling of a Carpenters album from 1971 but is very much in tune with Christmas today.

It is customary for holidays to evoke traditional music (“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” notwithstanding). Both “Mi Nueva Bici” and “Flowers by the Roadside” in their own way take a different path but they both bring us to the Spirit of Christmas.

EP Review: Valeska Rautenberg – Aerial Minds

Berlin-based Valeska Rautenberg has talents that extend beyond her singer-songwriting abilities. She’s also a composer, producer, worked as a voice-over actor, and a music teacher for many years. She was born in Berlin, Germany, to celebrated actor Klaus-Peter Thiele and painter, Rosemarie Rautenberg.

Valeska’s musical journey began as a teenager when she discovered her true love was music. She started with vocal training in Jazz and Blues, as well as piano, songwriting, and production, and received a private scholarship by a renown opera singer teaching at UDK Berlin who took an interest in her. She learned styles and techniques that would enable her to sing many different genres.

Valeska has been a music teacher, an actress, toured with bands, and would later join Der Wilde Garten, the band of famous violinist Georgi Gogow, to name only a few of her many notable accomplishments. Her journey was interrupted for many years for personal reasons and writing music helped her cope during that time.

In 2017, Valeska returned to the music world as an indie artist. She released her ambient pop single “Midnight Children” in March 2018, followed up in April with the single, “All Is Forgotten”. Four months later, Valeska released Aerial Minds, a four-track EP that contains her previously released tracks along with two new ones, “I Am Weak and So Are You” and “Judas”. She has plans for three more EPs each dedicated to one of the four elements. This EP is the first in the series, encompassing the element of Air.

Aerial Minds is a soundscape of captivating melodies and introspective lyrics that take you on a journey to explore your innermost feelings.

All Is Forgotten

“All Is Forgotten” is the second release from the EP and a standout track. Valeska describes this song as “an invitation for you to pause and remember all that has been with a bittersweet melancholy”.

The song’s intro is an engaging piano melody that softly makes its entrance. Valeska’s ethereal voice pierces through the melancholy and glides with a silky quality over the reflective soundscape. From that moment on, she captures you with gentle but commanding vocals unleashed in this stripped down environment.

The verses that follow are a visual narrative that shines through Valeska’s impassioned voice. Not only can you envision it but you can sense the emotional tug-of-war going on inside of her. The soft background vocals done by Valeska are a beautiful melodiously whisper in your ear. The lyrics convey a somber realization is effectively conveyed as she reflects on the past.

There is no building tension leading up to or anticipation of the chorus but when she gets there, Valeska releases a vocal mountaintop. The very high, angelic notes that she hits and sustains effortlessly. They feel otherworldly and combined with her haunting background harmonies, you feel as though you are soaring through the atmosphere. Then you experience her emotive power shift as Valeska gradually climbs down from the heavens and descends into a soothing lower register at the end.

The verses following repeat from the beginning with an exception. The last two lines have an airy call and response that cleverly sums up the song’s theme. Valeska’s somber realization that history repeats itself is answered with a thought provoking verse that resonates deeply.

At the end of the song, Valeska’s vocals are showcased again but without words, sailing over the dark piano melody until all remains are the last notes fade away.

“All Is Forgotten” is a somber exploration of awakening our pleasant and painful memories when reminiscing about the past.

Midnight Children

The ambient pop single, “Midnight Children” is a standout track which we reviewed earlier this year:

Valeska explains the theme of her song as “loving and accepting your beauty and your ugliness; about living your life a little differently, more intuitively.” She says this ambient song is for everyone who sees themselves as introverts, seekers, believers, moon howlers, over-thinkers, and melancholy lovers, to name a few.

Right from start, Valeska’s stunning mix of pop and bluesy vocals will cast their spell over you. The elongated words and angelic high notes have a mesmerizing quality. You can feel them envelop every part of your being while your body involuntarily sways in time to the dark melody.

There is an acapella feel to Valeska’s vocals that rise above the slow, deep hitting drum beats and bass which produce a marching feel. At the 3:00 mark of the song, Valeska, and the background vocals are sung in the rhythm of a ticking clock creating a lovely haunting effect. If you close your eyes while you listen, you’ll be swept up in a soothing wave of serenity.

Although this song walks on the dark side in terms of atmosphere, its lyrics elicit a powerful message of self-love and acceptance.

I Am Weak And So Are You

The first track on the EP is “I Am Weak And So Are You” which is a composition Valeska refers to as “falling in love with human weaknesses.”

The piano intro to the song is a gentle repetitive melody that sets the melancholy ambiance. It is upon this soundscape which Valeska’s calming vocals float on the first verses. There is a breathless quality in her voice that underscores the profound emptiness inside you that comes with the sorrow of losing everything close to you.

When she heads into the chorus she vocally builds a tension that tightens just enough then starts to let go in the middle. It isn’t until the repeating of the first line at the end that Valeska releases her powerhouse vocals. She masterfully weaves the intensity of passion and heartache with just two words — forgive me.

After reaching the end of that repeat, Valeska soars into the stratosphere with an ending note in her higher register. As quickly as it fades, there is an immediate emotive shift and a blending technique of the next verse that brings us back. Valeska employs in this verse, robust vocals that overlap themselves like an impassioned echo, a clever reflection of the lyric “I’m loud, so loud inside”.

From here, Valeska heads back into the chorus but without the same interpretation as previously. She digs in with her strong vocals with a lower register until the end. At this point, there is a curious sound bite of a phone dialing. This plays as a background landscape over which Valeska sings an emotional wordless melody. When she finishes, a “sorry, the number you have reached is no longer in service” message plays making you feel as though you have lost a connection to something or someone.

The song winds down hauntingly as you notice Valeska’s vocals briefly are altered, fuzzy, and dark. Then you sense the soundscape change and her voice takes on a lighter quality. You become aware of an underlying exhaustion and sadness contained in the final chorus before the solo piano notes fade away.

“I Am Weak And So Are You” is a journey into experiencing loss and coming through it by embracing and acknowledging our weakness so we can be stronger.

Judas

The unreleased track on the EP is “Judas”, a song that Valeska says is of how history repeats itself many times over and how finding someone to blame is never difficult.

A simple set of quiet, repetitive piano notes open the track. They deliver a melancholy melody that Valeska’s serene vocals drift sweetly along in the first verse as she addresses the Judas of this piece. She is not confronting them but giving more of a comforting reassurance to this person that their fears are unfounded.

In the chorus, you can feel the change to small nuances in her voice as she is imploring this person to see things as she does. This tension gradually builds up with captivating higher, elongated notes that touch the sky. It continues to grow until Valeska’s voice hits the highest level coming out of the chorus with a one-line verse. She ends on a climactic cliff as she finishes with a kind of frustration in her voice.

That frustration is the emotional turning point that carries into the next verse, as you feel her move further away from being empathetic. From here, there is a short jump back into just the first two lines of the chorus where the piano notes sparkle. On this backdrop, you feel the unique harmony created with Valeska’s soft vocals on separate tracks, subtly trading off the two lines.

She then glides into a repetition of the next line which is asking this person from another angle to uncover not only what they fear but what has made them bitter as well. Valeska returns to her higher register once again, incorporating those sky-high, impassioned endnotes. You ride along the short piano interlude before descending back down off the vocal mountain peak.

The song heads toward the finish incorporating the emotive harmonies of switching back and forth between the last verses. You can sense her profound emotional appeal to this person one last time as her lower register trades off with her higher one, and you feel like time is slowly ticking away.

“Judas” lays out to us that history does repeat itself but we should learn from it and not be quick to place the blame elsewhere.

Very Highly Recommended. The vocal and songwriting talents of Valeska Rautenberg shine on Aerial Minds. On each track, she allows her exquisite voice with its beautiful haunting quality, to be showcased with the barest of musical accompaniment. Valeska writes deep reflective songs that cover the human condition with compassion and insight. She should be on your essential playlist and artist to watch list. Anticipation and curiosity will be high for which of the four elements she chooses next for her follow up EP.

Review: Award Winning Artist/Producer DIDI – Green EP Limited Edition

Lauren Deakin Davies a.k.a. alternative pop/punk artist DIDI has for the second consecutive year won the prestigious NMG Producer of the Year Award and NMG’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award. She is a self-taught record producer who juggles her time with dual roles of both producer and performer which includes her four-piece band.

As a confidently skilled and talented producer, Lauren has been a popular specialist on the music panel circuit where she encourages women into production roles. She is also involved in mentoring, public speaking, and lecturing. Earlier this year, we did an in-depth interview with Lauren about her career as a producer and her then-new project as artist DIDI.

Hot on the heels of her latest single, “Fickle Friends”, she has released her much-anticipated EP, Green, which is Lauren’s first body of work as DIDI. The limited edition contains her all five previously released tracks plus the unreleased “GO!”. She has been performing all these songs at gigs over the past 18 months.

Lauren wrote each track in March/April 2017 when she started her new musical journey as DIDI. She began as a solo artist and self-producer, but now performs with a band and works with producer Rhiannon Mair a.k.a. indie pop/rock artist RUEN. She says the Green EP “represents a cohesive chapter of my life and I think my excitement at the start of something new is evident, a whole new phase in my life opening up, as the ‘front person’ “.

Green is an intoxicating mix of fierce, dynamic, and impassioned punk/pop tracks that generate a kick-ass roller coaster ride.

Fickle Friends

The first track out of the gate is “Fickle Friends” a first-rate standout song that has a fresh, take-no-prisoners perspective on friendship. The song’s guitar intro is very short but commanding. The high energy retro pop guitar sounding like a synth will hit you head on. But just as you’re moving to the danceable groove, it suddenly drops, taking a back seat to a much slower melody of heavy drums. The entrance of DIDI’s distinctive vocals adds an air of impending drama.

DIDI’s voice illuminates an emotionally raw but brutal honesty as it courses along the driving soundscape. You can really feel the tension winding up as she bitterly points out to her friend how their friendship has gone off the rails. However, this confrontation is not heading toward a typical pre-chorus reconciliation.

It is here in the pre-chorus where DIDI’s forceful vocals point out her friend’s flaws with every word punctuated with each drum beat. The guitar and drums ramp up like driving rain and couple with the sharp intakes of breath you hear at the start of each “can’t you”. This is when you can really experience the exasperation in DIDI’s forceful vocals as she rebukes her friend for her actions.

Heading into the chorus where there’s a surprising transformation of the lyrics cleverly backpedaling from the situation. Here is where DIDI’s vocals effortlessly switch gears emotionally. You can actually feel this as she beautifully showcases a softer impassioned vocal conveying a powerful underlying hurt.

Coming out of an energetic interlude, the last verses give the song its dramatic point. It is here where DIDI’s simmering vocals execute a bluntness that rise and fall with the melody. She demonstrates a powerful vocal climb as she holds out the note at the end “lies”. The guitar and drums then explode into a brilliantly fast and furious run that vibrates through your entire body.

DIDI returns to the chorus leaving behind the previous approach and attacks it with a punk attitude of renewed vocal vigor. She then skillfully winds down with her last observation that maybe they’re just fickle friends this time.

“Fickle Friends” is cleverly written and arranged with a vibe that might be the anthem for anyone who has a friendship that seems to erratically change frequently.

GO!

The second standout on this EP is the unreleased track, “GO!”, a tenacious portrayal of the emotional contrasts of an inevitable breakup. The intro is a spikey but leisurely guitar chord progression that makes you feel as though you’re deeply contemplating. DIDI’s airy, bright vocals enter subtly, matching the psychedelic synth/guitar melody with her effortless upper register for the first verse.

She builds the momentum heading into the chorus step by step, turning up the volume and strength with each word. You can feel as though she has lit a fuse and now you’re waiting with tense anticipation for the chorus to ignite.

DIDI leaves you hanging on before she rips into the chorus’ with a powerful vocal explosion of the word “Go”. Accompanied by wildly distorted guitars, DIDI grabs the verses of the chorus with a quiet confidence. She doesn’t waver when she tells her lover she’s decided the relationship is over and they must leave.

Coming out of the chorus, the guitars mellow out and circles back to the intro melody. DIDI lands softly like a feather on the last word of the verse, skillfully elongating the note as she reverts back into the contemplative mood of the song’s beginning. From here, she beautifully returns to the vocally climactic ascent to the chorus as before with the feeling as though she’s re-thinking her decision. You also sense the unrelenting ache in her impassioned voice.

What follows is a kick-ass gritty guitar solo that makes its powerful entrance and sweeps you up in its wake. It makes a rapid ascent to the mountaintop before abruptly jumping off and fading away. The distorted guitars pick up from this point in an almost anti-climactic way and head back up to the chorus.

DIDI’s vocals are more aggressive starting with the word, Go! like she’s definitely made up her mind and is now demanding her lover leave. Then as if this whole situation has exhausted her, DIDI winds the song down with a lovely gentler vocal at the very end.

“GO!” is an authentic and dynamic song that navigates the complexities of deciding whether or not to break up a relationship and how that can drag you to the edge and back emotionally.

Back Off

The track “Back Off” stands out for its raw, contagious energy and fiery punk attitude. This is an anthem for dealing with those people who tell you they’re better than you are. The intro is a spirited 1-2-3-4 count off on drumsticks that dives immediately into an equally energetic guitar riff to set the mood. However, it quickly levels off into more of a subdued upbeat but taut moment.

DIDI’s robust vocals slide along this tense part at a defined clip. You can hear the slight breathlessness at the end of each word as she’s giving a dressing down to the obnoxious stranger on the train harassing someone. But you have to wait on tender hooks for the chorus.

The pre-chorus has everything stripped away but the guitar. Her higher register precisely matches the guitar’s unhurried chord progression in amazing seamless unity.

The melody shifts back to the upbeat intro and DIDI lands her vocal punches squarely on target as she dresses down the stranger. There’s an anger underlying the perfectly controlled, assertive vocals that clue us in emotionally. Then the tense pre-chorus before the chorus storm repeats again and she turns it around and employs her angelic tone.

A roaring guitar solo follows the chorus before the song ends with the chorus just repeating. However, it’s more than that as winds down with a twist. DIDI’s vocals and the background vocals trade off in a brilliant response and call style.

“Back Off” is an empowering song of taking back control when confronted by those who dislike you for who you are.

Fast & Furious/Awkward/Sorry

The other tracks rounding out the six-track EP are very much gems in their own right.

“Fast & Furious” is a love song that showcases a clever tug-of-war structure. The song illustrates an effective two-part tempo between sets of verses how sometimes one person pushes for a relationship to move faster along and the other person wants to take it easy and move more slowly. The track was produced with Rhiannon Mair who played drums. The song’s second part which tells the other side of the story was written with London based artist Russell Swallow.

“Sorry” was the first solo song that DIDI wrote. It paints a heart-breaking picture of someone wanting too much from their lover who then pushed them away. You can actually feel the heartache emanating from the lyrics and DIDI’s melancholy vocals throughout the song.

“Awkward” is a stark and somber reminder of how patronizing people can be whether it’s face to face or online. DIDI wrote the song because her and her friends, especially the female musicians, have unfortunately been experiencing this situation a great deal.

There’s no doubting her talent for smart, visual lyrics crafted with potent pop/punk soundscapes. A full-length album in the future would be highly anticipated.

Song Review: Drea Releases Empowering Break-Up Anthem – Parachute

Singer-songwriter Drea dropped a surprise dance-chill single, “Parachute” on October 26. The Halloween-themed break-up anthem is a follow-up to her “Hometown” single released earlier this year. The release is a project that began 4 years ago originally as a collaboration with LA songwriter/producer Teo Olivares. She then brought in dance producer/DJ Kayja, a long-time music partner to infuse new life into the track.

“Parachute” originated in Teo’s shed-turned studio that provided Drea with some unexpected inspiration. While Teo was producing the main synth line at the beginning of the song, Drea spotted a spider crawling up a wall. As a result, she created the song’s first line. The lyrics were inspired by “a ghostly feeling of betrayal felt after the end of a toxic relationship.” Drea explains, ” “Parachute” is for the people who are finding the strength to finally own their worth and move on from situations that no longer serve them.”

Drea is also a women’s advocate, creating programs that empower and support women as well as serving on the Board of Directors of two non-profit organizations in Los Angeles that benefit women and youth in need.

On January 31, 2018, Drea launched Reclaim Movement a dance class open for all levels. The class empowers women to reclaim ownership of their bodies after the trauma of sexual assault through music and movement. Drea told us more about it in our interview with her earlier this year.

She also organized and hosted the first For Her Concert Series in May 2018. The concert series is a live music event in Los Angeles that features performances by female musicians. Staffed and organized by an all-women team, the event benefits women in need.

In addition, Drea serves on the Board of Directors for The Ladybugs Movement, a non-profit campaign. The campaign works to bring feminine hygiene products to Los Angeles homeless women.

Just recently, she was voted onto the Board of Directors of ProjectMuszed, an LA-based non-profit organization which works to provide youth in need with opportunities in music education, performance, and higher learning. Currently, Drea would like to expand her passion for non-profit and local government action and is applying to graduate programs in Public Affairs to accomplish this.

“Parachute” is a captivating soundscape that performs a haunting emotional choreography for your heart and mind.

The intro to “Parachute” is spiky synth line invokes a feeling of something creepy walking up behind you. The tension breaks and the melody smooths out as Drea’s sultry vocals enchant you with the first verse. The alluring bluesy, huskiness of her voice creates a quiet tension as she confronts her lover that even the spider on the wall can see through the charade.

The next two sets of verses Drea cleverly vocally ratchets up her effort to elicit a confession. Her velvety lower register elongates each word then switches off effortlessly to higher notes as it floats along the eerie synth-fueled melody. At the same time, you can feel an ache in her voice as she urges her lover to come clean. In the chorus, Drea’s emotion shifts noticeably to a warm, upbeat one as she tries to cajole him with the fact that he’d be better off staying with her.

Coming out of the chorus, there is a dramatic drop and the melody circles back to the synth intro for the next set of verses. Drea vocally transforms, smoothly matching the hypnotic up and down synth rhythm. Drea brings to life the clever lyrics that visually depict a “haunted” bedroom of betrayal in hopes of scaring her lover into revealing his secret.

In the second chorus that follows, it builds on all that has come before. The synth line makes you feel as though you are spiraling through the atmosphere. Drea’s riveting vocals deliver a warning to her lover that he’s out there with no parachute in a free fall. The melody transitions to a marching beat and her vocals become bright but with an interrogational tone as she reminds her lover that she has the power to save their relationship if he would just tell her what he did.

“Parachute” is a powerful anthem of confronting the toxicity of a relationship but being empowered to end it when the betrayal is too great to overcome.

Very Highly Recommended. Drea showcases her superb vocal and songwriting ability with this track. Her R&B infused voice coupled with the ability to switch it up is captivating.
