Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Lily Fontaine (@englishteacherbandband)
Conceived at some point in 2016 after downloading GarageBand on her phone, it wasn’t until frontwoman Lily Fontaine met the boys in 2018 that the band English Teacher was actually born. They played their first gig next door to a female wrestling tournament; two shows later they supported Yellow Days.
Recorded onto 8 track reel-to-reel tape across 2 Hyde park bedrooms, their DIY debut EP ‘Valentine’ explores different types of love; not only your Valentine but for your art, your idols, strangers and yourself, through a dreamy and metaphor heavy frame. Since it’s release on February 7th, 2019, they have had the pleasure of shoving it in the ears of audiences at venues across the UK, supporting the likes of Boogarins, No Vacation, and Lala Lala.
‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’ by English Teacher was released on all streaming platforms on the 28th of February 2020. The track was recorded and produced by James Sanger (The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, Brian Eno) during a crowdfunded 10 day trip to a live-in a studio in Normandy.
English Teacher is Lily Fontaine (Vocals, Guitar) Dan Thomas (Guitar) Nicholas Eden (Bass) and Douglas Frost (Drums).
Lily shared with me what it means to her personally to be an indie music woman artist:
“Personally it’s taken me a long time to figure out that I can be an indie musician. Growing up, my gender’s representation was poor in the genres I listened to, and representation of my ethnicity was none existent. It can feel overwhelming sometimes when I notice I am the only woman of colour in the room, but after discovering Skunk Anansie and with artists like Big Joanie, Nabihah Iqbal and Nova Twins gaining momentum, I don’t want to give it up.”
You can hear English Teacher’s single on the Indie Music Women’s Spotify Playlist.
