Indie Music Women’s Featured Artist of the Day is…
Genie Morrow of Sputnik The Band (@sputniktheband)
Genie Morrow is the frontwoman and singer-songwriter in New York based Sputnik The Band. Genie started writing as a child, and ballads of survival are the themes of her songs. Her lyrics and ethereal yet gritty voice take the listener to wondrous places from the fields of Salinas, CA, outer space, the lower east side of NYC and the powerlines on Cape Cod at dawn.
Led by Genie on vocals, Sputnik The Band include Mic Rains on guitar, Pemberton Roach on bass, the infamous Nigel Rawles on the traps, Joe Drew on trumpet and keys and Mark Piro on piano. These guys inspire a mixture of pop, powered interplay with dreamy & irresistible melodies.
Their long-awaited album, ‘333’ was produced by Grammy Award winner producer, Carl Glanville.
Genie and Sputnik The Band have toured the college circuit and performed in various venues in New York City and up the east coast, such as Knitting Factory, Maxwell’s, The Living Room, The Beachcomber, Arlene’s Grocery, and Mercury Lounge. You can catch them at many indie rock venues in NYC including the Rockwood Music Hall, Pianos, and The Bitter End.
Genie shared with me what it means to be an indie music woman artist: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be an indie music woman artist during this time in history. Being an indie woman artist gives women musicians a strong voice to connect the world through the stories and visions of the music we create. My dream as a singer/songwriter is to make people laugh, cry, feel alive and open the hearts and consciousness of everyone all over the world using my voice and the messages of our music.“
You can hear Sputnik The Band’s single, “20 to Go” on the Indie Music Women’s Spotify Playlist.
