Nashville based, Southern Rock/Americana Sister Antics aren’t really sisters. AnneMarie Kelbon and Vivian Nicastro are friends who met in New York through their shared passion for motorcycles. Discovering their other shared passion was music, they teamed up and were co-writing at the end of 2015. Kelbon and Nicastro quickly discovered their sound which they describe as a “southern rock blend of rock and roll, country, and blues.”
Sister Antics found rapid success in the local original music scene upon relocating from New York to Nashville in 2017. They launched a very successful crowdfunding campaign for their self-titled EP which was in response to demand for their recorded music. The EP was released in January 2018 and their tour called Brand New Start will begin in May to support it.
Kelbon and Nicastro are not only singers, but multi-instrumentalists playing electric and acoustic guitar, and harmonica which they demonstrate fabulously on this debut. The talented songwriters wrote all 5 original songs for the EP.
Kelbon shows her amazing writing skill with the lead guitar riffs she wrote for “All That I Need” and “V-Twin Rumble.” The electric guitar solos were played by guitarist/producer Brian Elliot (but Kelbon plays them at live shows) and are reminiscent of the guitar playing style of Robbie Robertson (The Band).
They cite their influences as Sheryl Crow, Janis Joplin, Steve Ray Vaughn, Houndmouth, Shovels & Rope and The Lone Bellow that blend together into rock and roll, Americana, and blues. Their music will also remind you of the rich, robust Southern Rock/Americana sound of such bands as The Rossington Collins Band.
The EP opens with the upbeat country/rock flavored track, “V-Twin Rumble”. Nicastro and Kelbon immediately show how they strong their vocals are and how they wonderfully harmonize. This one could be a summer anthem. It takes you on a journey of wanting to hop on your motorcycle to leave it all behind. The guitar notes fade out one by one at the end as though you’re watching a V-Twin disappearing down the open road.
The track “Brand New Life” stands out for its warm harmonies and haunting melody created by the emotional duet of the wailing lap steel guitar and Nicastro’s sorrowful harmonica. Kelbon and Nicastro sound reminiscent of Wynonna & Naomi Judd (The Judds) with their beautiful harmonizing throughout the song. Their heartfelt vocals strongly convey the internal struggle one feels when leaving home to start a new life but feeling conflicted about leaving it and everyone behind.
For a post-breakup song,”It Is What It Is” feels anything but. It opens with a gorgeous acoustic guitar intro and from there this song encapsulates you in a soft, slow flowing melody. Kelbon and Nicastro’s vocals are powerful yet silky smooth even as they hit the high notes together. The sweet guitar solos will have you swaying along like flowers in a summer breeze.
“That’s Just Life” is a full-on blues flavored song incorporating the somberness of an organ and a melancholy lap steel. The melody is a waltz that sweeps you out of your seat and along with it. Vivian Nicastro plays a soulful harmonica solo that invokes a haunting sadness. It complements the lyrics that lament you have to think it’s just life when everything doesn’t go right. But maybe that isn’t a bad thing after all.
The train rolling down the track melody opens “All That I Need”. The toe-tapping intro is created with a solo bright acoustic guitar that is then accompanied by some deep bass. They are joined by the lead guitar that adds some fierce riffs into the mix before breaking into a sweet rock flavored solo. Kelbon and Nicastro harmonize their gritty, honest vocals that bring the lyrics to life. The lyrics do take heartbreak to another level in a realization that only you, not someone else, is all that you really need.
Sister Antics is an impressive debut and a definite must-have in your music collection. These very talented singers/songwriters should also be on your ‘Artists To Watch’ list. The follow-up to this EP will be highly anticipated.
