Indie Music Women’s Artist of the Day is…
Kat Hammock (@kat.hammock)
Kat Hammock is a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Encinitas, California. Most known for her recent appearance on Season 17 of NBC’s “The Voice”, Kat was a member of Blake Shelton’s team and placed 5th on the show. On “The Voice,” she was also mentored by Taylor Swift and Darius Rucker and performed for Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend. Kat’s original music and vocal style are influenced by music from the 1960s and 1970s as well as current artists.
Kat started posting covers on YouTube and releasing recordings of original songs when she was 16, leading to her opportunity on “The Voice.” She is currently based in Nashville where she is writing and recording her debut EP.
Kat shared with me what it means to her to be an indie music woman artist:
“Being a woman indie artist takes a certain drive and passion that other types of artists might not possess. Producing music independently is hard. Money and resources are often limited, and indie music rarely gets the praise and attention it deserves. Being a woman adds another layer of difficulty to the task. Women are not always taken seriously in the music industry. However, to me, being a woman indie artist means that my music reflects what’s in my heart, whether it is loved or scorned by popular culture. My music is 100% my own, without influence from a label or contract. And that is a beautiful thing.”
